Acclaimed for his electrifying, unforgettable sets at California’s early Full Moon Gatherings, legendary DJ John Kelley is considered a true pioneer of the West Coast sound. As one of the two original resident DJs of the influential ‘Moontribe’ parties founded in the 1990s and held in the Mojave desert outside Los Angeles, John Kelley fused house, techno and the breakbeat genius of UK acts such as Leftfield and Underworld into his own distinctive style of “funky desert breaks.” His hard, psychedelic and always funky beats inspired an emergent sound and explosively kinetic movement on the desert dance floor. It also gave rise to Kelley’s seminal mixes, the hugely successful Funky Desert Breaks series. These mixes, along with Kelley’s sophisticated turntable skills and hard-working ethic soon catapulted him from the underground to venues all over North America. He unleashed his signature sound on ecstatic masses at festivals such as Electric Daisy Carnival and Nocturnal Wonderland, while burning up the decks at virtually every nameable club across the U.S. and Canada and amassing an enormous fan base. More successful DJ mixes followed, along with the celebrated High Desert Soundsystem series. John found himself touring with the likes of DJ Dan and Carl Cox and signed on as the official DJ of the 1999 Community Service tour with Orbital and Crystal Method. In between touring internationally, Kelley carved impressive beats in the studio and together with music partner David deLaski founded the record label Ball of Waxx to showcase up and coming West Coast talent. The debut of his own album A Night in the Park in 2005 to critical acclaim marked Kelley’s transformation from veteran DJ to world-class producer. His tracks receive frequent air play on the influential radio station KCRW, Groove Salad and have been licensed by TV shows such as CSI. Living and producing music in Los Angeles, John Kelley's first love remains tearing up the dance floor with his masterful blend of edgy yet accessible and still very much funky music.
